Podcast and New Media Expo Wrap-Up

Wednesday, October 03, 2007

The expo wrapped up on Sunday and I’m still in the area for business, so I haven’t had a chance to gather my thoughts on the expo and what was my personal takeaway. This was my first year at the expo and I had a great time meeting new people, connecting with those I already knew and, of course, dodging traffic while crossing traffic from the Marriot to the convention center. So, without further delay, here are three things that I walked away with from the conference:

  1. It’s not just about podcasting. We’ve seen that in the subtle conference name change over the last few years and now the transition is near complete with the removal of “podcast” from next year’s conference name. I don’t know if this was a concious and organized effort on part of some of the speakers and the conference organizers (Tim?), but the talk was all about “new media” as the future and “podcasting” as just a small part of that. I couldn’t agree more. In fact, I overheard someone say “Calling yourself a ‘podcaster’ is like calling yourself a ‘RSSer’.” It’s not about the tools you use, but about the content you create and the connection you make with your intended audience (whether for commercial or non-commercial reasons).

  2. Don’t forget the newbies. There was a strong contingency of conference attendees who were new to podcasting and used the conference as a discovery tool. I know I had many newbies in my session on Sunday. Let’s not forget them in our charge to bring podcasting and new media to the top of the heap.

  3. Monetize your brand, not your podcast. This one comes from several sessions I attended and discussions I had where the focus turned to the crowd favorite, monetization. The two guys behind Ask A Ninja taught us that monetization isn’t just about selling ads on your podcast or video show. It’s also about monetizing your established brand. 20-30% of their gross revenue comes from merchandising efforts. Wow.

There were many, many more idea threads started throughout the 3 days, but these are the ones that have stuck with me over the last few days. Once I get home and settled, sort through business cards of people I met and begin to read what others are writing about the conference, hopefully even more ideas will bubble to the surface.

Planning and Automating Your Podcast Workflow

If you weren’t at the expo this year or had to leave town before my Sunday late morning talk, I’ve posted some links and slides to a new site called Podcast Workflows. I don’t have any immediate plans to build out this site, so for now it’ll just host my slides, some links and possibly pull in some articles I’ve written on the topic.

Video Podcaster Who Sold Podcast for 5 Million Opens Expo

Saturday, September 29, 2007

Howard Lindzon was featured Friday morning in the opening keynote of the Podcast Expo. Linzdon created the video podcast Wall Strip, which he sold to CBS for (reportedly) $5 million.  Podcasting News has a nice run-down on the Linzdon interview, including a few good quotes from the keynote interview.

Thanks for stopping by.

We just completed the book signing at the Digital Guru bookstore here at the Podcast and New Media Expo. Thanks to everyone who purchased a book and had us sign it. It’s exciting to see a stack of business podcasting books.  I am very appreciative of the opportunity to work on this book and humbled by the folks who stopped by the signing for a chat and to pick up a book.

If you want to pick up a copy of the book and have it delivered to you, the best place to do that is at Amazon.com

The Business Podcasting Book - Book Signing

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Michael reminded me with his post that I need to announce the book signing for the new Podcast Academy: The Business Podcasting Book. It will take place this Friday (9/28) at 1PM in the Digital Guru Bookstore in the exhibit hall of the Podcast and New Media Expo in Ontario, CA. The exhibit hall is free for anyone (free registration required).

All of the authors will be around to chat about the book, sign it (*blush*) and answer any questions you might have, so please stop by!

Podcast Expo 2007

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

The 2007 Podcast and New Media Expo gets underway next week. I’ve been busy preparing for my talk on podcast workflows and automation but have been looking through the schedule for some sessions that interest me.  The verdict is in: There are too many! I’m going to have a hard time deciding which sessions I want to attend.

Last I heard there is still room if you haven’t yet signed up and would like to attend. I do know that two hotels (Marriot and Doubletree) are already sold out, so you’ll want to check the conference website for additional hotels.

I’m looking forward to meeting up with some friends, but most importantly meeting new people and hearing about their podcasting ideas. Hope to see you there!

60 Days Until the Podcast Expo in Ontario, CA

Sunday, July 29, 2007

Have you registered yet?

My session on podcast workflows will take place on Sunday, September 30 from 11:45-12:45. Here’s the session description:

Podcasting can take time. A lot of time. By carefully planning, streamlining and, in some cases, automating your podcast workflow, you can have more time to devote to brainstorming new podcast content. This session will discuss how to plan and automate your podcast workflow so that you’re spending less time doing redundant tasks and more time creating useful content for your listeners. If you find yourself taking hours to put your show together and are beginning to dread the process, you need to attend this session and learn how to work more efficiently.

I’ve posed a couple of questions in the Podcast Expo forums. When you have a moment, please let me know your thoughts and experiences.

Full conference registration is $299 and the exhibit hall and keynotes are free and open to the public.

Podcast Academy #6

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Michael Geohagen reports that the registration for Podcast Academy 6 is now open. This time it’ll be back in Ontairo, CA right before the Podcast Expo. This will be a full-day session with some of the best in the podcasting field. Not to be missed if you’re coming to CA to learn more about podcasting. From what I hear the Q&A session is particulary popular. I can't wait to see the speaker line-up. It'll be good, for sure.

If you’ll be in town for the Expo, don’t forget that I’ll be presenting on Sunday during a session on podcast workflow. See you there?
